Chapter Twelve

Willow frowned. Computers were funny things.

On days when they ran smoothly, when much needed Web pages loaded fast or software efficiently spotted the ghastly typo in a midterm that would have embarrassed one to no end, it could be a user’s best friend. On days when it froze every time a simple print was attempted or an e-mail with a big attachment crashed the machine and cost a user hours of work, it could be one’s most hated enemy.

Usually, Willow was on good terms with the computer world. She understood how things worked, the ways to lobby its congress and get what she wanted, even where to find the good spots with the best information that it didn’t advertise publicly. She was a citizen of the nation of source tags and codes.

But today, she wondered if somehow her citizenship had been revoked. Nothing was going her way. Her research was a collection of dead ends, and she couldn’t Google to save her life. Literally. If a vamp busted through the window and tried to fang her, she wouldn’t even be able to find a Web page that told her how to kill it. Not that she needed one, with the number of vamps she’d staked, but that wasn’t the point.

Mel’s efforts to sink her with Dr. Sands had really ticked her off. Much is made of the bullies in school who pick on the nerds and make geek jokes and do the clichéd bully things, but Willow was all too aware that there was another substrata of the bully species. Brainiacs were not free of the tormentor gene. Some very smart people were also very mean, and Willow had dealt with them her whole life. It had started in kindergarten when Jason Shields had advanced faster than the rest of the class in building blocks and had used them to spell “Booger.” He’d point at the blocks and then at Willow and laugh and tell everyone that she was the booger. She had wanted to stick those blocks in various places of his anatomy, spelling the body part they were entering as they went in.

College so far had been relatively free of the brainiac bully. But Willow had known they were out there, and it had only been a matter of time before someone like Mel had come along.

And now Willow wanted to beat him at his own game.

The advice she’d always heard for dealing with playground tyrants was to stand up to them. It was said they were really cowards and they’d back off. So, it stood to reason that if you fought violent bullies with violence, the brainiacs would have to be brought down with intellect.

This was how Willow wanted to handle Mel. Dark Willow could reduce him to dust in a blink, but she didn’t want to set that side of herself free. Besides, there would be no real satisfaction in that. She’d only get a second of revenge, and possibly a lifetime of regret if things got out of hand.
